We invite you to unleash your imagination and express your creativity through painting, drawing, and animation using various media. We provide all art supplies with several exceptions, noted below.
Mixed media art uses more than one medium or material in a single piece of artwork, such as combining ink drawing with watercolor paint and adding highlights in colored pencil. Mixed media also may use different styles of paint (like resin or alcohol inks), cloth, and paper. It can also be done by adding found objects like buttons and leaves.
Mixed Media can include sculpture, collage, 3-D assemblages, printmaking, silkscreen, papier mache and clay.
Our mixed media class is an opportunity to experience a variety of mediums to create personal and imaginative art pieces. These pieces are loosely structured around famous art styles and feature the basics of composition, color and shape.
Students explore the drawing skills needed to create their own anime characters, comic book, and cartoons or cartoon characters as they also find their own creative expression.
Anime is a style of animation originating in Japan that has stark colorful graphics, action-filled plots, and often fantastic or futuristic themes.
Comics are a story told using sequential panel images to express ideas, usually combined with text or other visual information. They often include characters that are popular in other media, such as movies, television, and video games.
Cartooning is the art of clarity, simplification, caricature, and pantomime and is one of the earliest forms of illustration. This class introduces students to constructive drawing, which incorporates building a very cartoony character out of geometric shapes or doodles, expressive facial expressions, and geometric and organic shapes.
This class covers the fundamentals of drawing and painting with a focus on color theory and composition. We use a variety of materials—charcoal, pastel, watercolors, and acrylic paints—to develop compositions on all sized canvases. Students will work with landscapes, still lifes and portraiture while learning drawing skills including contour lines, perspective and size relationships, shading, and color. Various techniques such as greyscale, light and shadow effects, mark making, and grid methods are also taught. Different themes will be introduced throughout the course. All levels are welcome as the instruction can be tailored to the students’ experience.
Digital art is one of the most popular art styles today as technology continues to shape and transform the creative landscape. While traditional art involves a mastery of techniques like manual brush strokes and color blending, digital art needs expert knowledge about software tools to create different effects. In this course, students will use digital media techniques to create their art using software programs such as Procreate.
NOTE: Students must provide their own iPad and stylus, and download the Procreate app on their device.
Animation is a unique art form combining storytelling, drawing and painting with motion. In this class, students learn drawing for 2D animation through skills such as basic construction, line of action, exaggerated perspective, force, rhythm, gravity, design, volume, and physics along with the major principles of animation. They also explore 3D stop-motion animation using clay, puppets and other three-dimensional objects. In addition, students will learn how to pitch an idea, develop a concept, and work up a production schedule using hands-on and digital tools.
